How to tell if a website looks AI-generated

Look for defaults nobody chose: one stock font, purple gradients, glows, emoji icons, icon card grids and vague copy. Several together make a page read as generated.

“Spot the generic tells.” A generic landing page with callouts for a purple gradient, emoji icons and the same card grid, beside a score gauge from 0 to 100.
Each tell is marked where it appears, then scored.

In short

  • Generated pages repeat the same defaults: Inter, stock purple, gradient text, glows and icon card grids
  • One tell means little; several strong ones together make a page look generated
  • A score measures how generic a design looks, not whether AI built it
  • Fix the strongest tells first, then check the page again

01

Paste the link

Paste the page’s link into the free AI slop checker. Sitepeel opens the page and measures what is really there.

02

Read the score

See a 0–100 score, the tells that drive it, and each tell marked where it appears on the page.

03

Copy the fix prompt

Paste it into Cursor, Claude Code, Lovable, v0 or Bolt. It keeps your colors and copy.

04

Check the page again

Run the checker on the updated page to confirm the fixed tells are gone.

Why a score isn’t proof

The score measures how generic a design looks. Templates, UI kits and hand-built sites share the same defaults, so a person can make a high-scoring page and a well-briefed AI can make a low one.

TipNever say a site was made with AI from the score alone.

  • Some tells, like Inter or icon card grids, appear on great sites too, so they count lightly.
  • Weak signals only count next to stronger ones.
  • Builder traces, such as a Lovable badge, are shown separately as facts.

Check a page by hand in DevTools

Right-click a heading, choose Inspect, and look for these in the Styles and Computed panes.

  • font-family, and Rendered Fonts under Computed, for headings and body text.
  • background-clip: text on headings: that is gradient text.
  • box-shadow with a colored value: that is a glow.
  • backdrop-filter on cards: that is frosted glass.
  • filter: blur() on shapes behind sections: those are blobs.
  • Then read the headline aloud. If it could sell any product, it is generic.

Fix the strongest tells first

The checker’s fix prompt lists every fix with where it was found, and ends with rules your coding tool can check its work against.

Common tells and their fixes
TellFix
Gradient textSolid headings in your text color; use weight or size for emphasis
Glows and blobsDelete them; use a neutral shadow or a 1px border for depth
Stock purpleA brand color chosen on purpose, set once as a token
Icon card gridA screenshot with callouts, a short demo or a list with real numbers
Vague headlineSay what the product does and who it is for
Emoji iconsRemove them, or use plain icons only where they help

Make a generic AI website specific to your product

A few useful answers.

What is AI slop in web design?

Design that looks generic because nobody made choices: default fonts and colors, stock effects, template layouts and filler copy. The term is aimed at AI-made pages, but hand-built templates can look the same.

Can you tell if a website was made with AI?

Not for certain from the design alone. You can see whether it uses the defaults AI builders favor. Firmer evidence is a trace the builder left, such as a “Made with” badge or a starter page title.

Is using Inter a sign of AI design?

Not on its own. Inter is a well-made font used by many hand-built sites. It reads as a default when it is the only font on every heading and paragraph, next to other tells.

Is the AI slop checker free?

Yes. It is a free website tool with no install. Paste a link to get a score, the tells marked on the page and a fix prompt.
