How to tell if a website was vibe coded

A vibe coded website is one built mostly by prompting an AI app builder such as Lovable, Bolt, v0 or Replit. To tell, look for builder traces, like a badge or a .lovable.app address, and for the stock look: one default font, purple buttons, glows and identical card grids. Sitepeel’s free AI slop checker finds both.

“Is this site vibe coded?” A generic landing page under a magnifying glass, with tags for a builder badge, stock purple and the same card grid, and a note: clues, not proof.

In short

  • Vibe coded means built mostly by prompting an AI builder, not by writing code
  • Builder traces, like a “Made in Bolt” badge or a .lovable.app address, are real evidence
  • The stock look is only a clue: templates and people use it too
  • The AI slop checker shows both, and never calls a site AI-made from its score

Step by step

  1. Paste the link

Paste the site’s link into the free AI slop checker and press Check.

  2. Look for Made with

When the page carries a builder’s traces, the report names the builder and shows the evidence.

  3. Read the tells

See the score from 0 to 100 and each generic default marked where it appears.

  4. Treat the score as a clue

A high score means the design looks generic. It doesn’t prove who or what built it.

What does vibe coded mean for a website?

Andrej Karpathy coined “vibe coding” in February 2025 for building software by describing it to an AI and accepting what it writes, often without reading the code. A vibe coded website is one made that way, usually in an app builder like Lovable, Bolt, v0, Replit or Base44.

It says how a site was made, not whether it is good. Plenty of vibe coded sites work well; they just tend to look alike.

Builder traces: the real evidence

Builders leave marks in the address, the page and its files. These are the ones the AI slop checker looks for and lists under Made with:

Why vibe coded websites look the same

Builders start from the same kit, usually Tailwind CSS, shadcn/ui and Lucide icons, and when nobody makes a choice they fill the gap with the same defaults:

  • One font on everything, usually Inter
  • Tailwind’s stock indigo or violet on the buttons
  • Gradient text, glowing blobs and frosted glass cards
  • A centered hero with a pill badge above the headline and two buttons
  • Three or six cards, each an icon, a title and one sentence
  • A headline that could sell anything

Check any website for AI slop

The free AI slop checker opens the page, measures what is really there and scores it from 0 to 100. Each tell is marked on a picture of the page with its evidence, and builder traces show separately as a fact that never changes the score.

A page on a .bolt.host address in the free AI slop checker: the score, and Made with Bolt as a separate fact.

Is vibe coding bad for a website?

No. It is a fast way to ship. The costs show up later: a page visitors feel they have seen before, and code nobody reviewed for accessibility or security. The look is the easy part to fix: give the builder a real design and a list of what to change.

Questions

What does it mean when a website is vibe coded?

It was built mostly by describing it to an AI app builder, such as Lovable, Bolt, v0 or Replit, and accepting what it made, often without anyone reading the code.

Is there a vibe coded website detector?

Yes. Sitepeel’s free AI slop checker shows builder traces, such as a Lovable badge or a .bolt.host address, and scores how generic the design looks, with each tell marked on the page.

Why do vibe coded websites all look the same?

Builders start from the same components and fill every unmade choice with the same defaults: Inter, stock purple buttons, glows, a centered hero and icon card grids.

Can you tell for sure if a website was made with AI?

Only from builder traces, like a badge, a builder’s address or its markers in the page. A generic look is a clue, not proof: templates and hand-built sites share the same defaults.

How do I make a vibe coded site look less generic?

Run the AI slop checker, paste its fix prompt into your builder, and give it a DESIGN.md with real colors and type. Then check the page again.
